Fireman Overcomes Heat In Cracking Display

WIGSTON firefighter Mark White survived the Hawaii heat at the World Ironman Championships
to race to one of the fastest ever times by a Leicestershire triathlete.

Despite temperatures which at times touched 45 degrees Fahrenheit, the 35-year-old from Enderby clocked an
amazing 9hr 26min-36sec to be the second Briton to finish over a course which involved a 2.4 mile swim, a 112 mile bike and
a 26 mile 385yd marathon run.

White had to overcome early cramp in his calves to complete the swim in 62min 16sec,
the bike ride in 5hr 6min 9sec and the run in 3.11.59. He finished 15th in his M35-39 age-group out of 256 athletes,
all of whom had to have won a leading age group place at one of the 26 qualifying races
around the world, and he was 119th overall out of 1743 starters.

Overall winner Fans Al-Sul-tan, of Germany, clocked 8.14.17 (49.54; 4.25.24; 2.54.51).

White had spent several years attempting to qualify for the event before finally succeeding
at the Ironman Florida last November.
